This one caught my eye, because I use Hornady Critical Defense as my carry round, so when I see a review about it I tend to want to see how it did.
BUT....
And here's where I might get a few gunnies ripping out their hair...
The real difference between self defense rounds, in how their terminal performance compares with one another, is damn near negligible for the average joe like me.
People can debate all they want about how ten inches of penetration vs. fourteen inches of penetration, and .87 inch expansion vs. .79 inch expansion, and so forth and so on, but the only real question I have is "Will it make the bad guy stop doing what he's doing so I can get away?" And on that score, damn near every self-defense round meets the objective. As long as the rounds work in your gun (and I've found rounds that did NOT work in my gun while trying them out at the range) then you'll be able to accomplish your goal, i.e. stop the bad guy and get home alive.
Still fun to watch. Always worth the time to learn something new, especially when it might save your life.

I always sort of felt the same way. Any of the modern hollow point ammo from the major manufacturers that your gun shoots, is most likely going to do the job. A qualifier is that I am not one of those who are expecting one shot to stop someone from trying to cause me harm, and so my practice revolves around me shooting at least two quick shots, and then a check for effect, if appropriate. I guess that if I carried a magnum caliber, it might be different, but I don't really know that for sure.
As long as the ammunition is reliable, and that's the #1 thing you need, the rest is an exercise in statistics. Does the ammo go "BANG" when I pull the trigger? Then that's a hole in the bad guy, and that's a chance for me to get away. Two holes is better. Three is even better, but my goal is first and foremost to stop the bad guy and get away.
As someone who has been shot, it didn't matter much. The x rays clearly show 8 fragments. The pieces of jacket are obviously different than the lead. And whatever it was, ball v hollow point , it shattered the femur and some material did exit.
