I can get behind this

Want to teach your kids responsibility?  Get them into 4-H.

I was in 4-H as a kid.  It eventually got me into raising my own pigs.  I started with two.  After the first year, I got four.  We got piglets in spring, I raised them, and they were slaughtered in the fall.  For years after I left home, I could not eat pork from the supermarkets, because it was absolutely foul compared to the pork I raised in high school.

Pork is not a white meat, folks.  Not if it's raised right.

But as the article points out, there's tons of other things 4-H does other than agricultural activities.  It's probably one of the best activities you can get your kids into these days.

Over 30 years I knew a bunch of 4H, I figure nearly 1,000 plus their parents. Except for ONE boy with a lousy attitude, every of them were great people. I could go on and on about the merits of those folks but suffice to say I saw correlation between the 4H programs and the wonderful character development and life skills as proven by those who participated in 4H.

Another program which is on the same path is the Appleseed Project. I have in mind a quote attributed to T. Jefferson (1785):

"A strong body makes the mind strong. As to the species of exercises, I advise the gun. While this gives moderate exercise to the body, it gives boldness, enterprise and independence to the mind. Games played with the ball, and others of that nature, are too violent for the body and stamp no character on the mind. Let your gun therefore be your constant companion of your walks."
