The reasoning being that an object that has invaded your body and remained inside your body is likely plugging any holes that it has made in blood vessels; you leave it there to act as a kind of stopper until you can get to hospital or some similar medical facility.

I am certainly not second guessing the guy, who was doubtlessly in shock and in considerable pain, but I wonder if he was fatally wounded upon being impaled or if he sealed his fate by removing the barb.
Or both.
