Many years ago I quit with the gifts for the young ones in the family and gave them gift cards with the caveat they must write and tell me what they purchased. The postage for sending stuff all over the country was becoming ridiculous.
So now - since I'm a deplorable right wing religious fanatic none of them will have anything to do with me. Saves a ton at the holidays.
I have gifted a few of my friends with things I absolutely know they want. Out of town? Amazon with free shipping.
