I would be remiss if I didn't mention the passing of the Godfather of Soul, James Brown. There are plenty of musical acts that have come and gone, but I don't think you'll find many others that influenced people like James Brown. Hell, I don't know if Funk would have ever happened without him.
I think I need to go find a copy of "I Got You" and play it non-stop for a while.
