You can have peace. Or you can have freedom. Don't ever count on having both at once. - Robert A. Heinlein -
A professor at Northern Kentucky University said she invited students in one of her classes to destroy an anti-abortion display on campus Wednesday evening.Oy!
NKU police are investigating the incident, in which 400 crosses were removed from the ground near University Center and thrown in trash cans. The crosses, meant to represent a cemetery for aborted fetuses, had been temporarily erected last weekend by a student Right to Life group with permission from NKU officials.

Sally Jacobsen, a longtime professor in NKU's literature and language department, said the display was dismantled by about nine students in one of her graduate-level classes.
"I did, outside of class during the break, invite students to express their freedom-of-speech rights to destroy the display if they wished to," Jacobsen said.

The Washington Post was correct in editorializing that Democrats had killed the immigration bill. Reid decided that immigration is better used as a political issue than a legislative one, hence his decision to block all amendments, leading to the bill's death on the floor.
At a meeting of principals, Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-Tenn.) proposed a compromise by which some amendments to toughen the bill would receive a vote on the floor.
Reid refused. Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) took Reid's side. He reportedly remarked to a colleague that he didn't care whether a bill passed because Democrats would gain three Senate seats this fall and return to construct an immigration bill as they liked. Schumer and Reid are actually harnessing the Right's rage over the immigration issue to unleash it against Republicans.
Reid has shown his skill once again at dragging out the legislative calendar. Despite a 10-seat disadvantage in the upper chamber of Congress, he has figured out numerous ways of milking the clock, draining away the last precious days of the large GOP Senate majority. The entire week he managed to waste on the immigration bill was a serious accomplishment. Reid likewise forced the waste of an entire week on the asbestos issue.
The comments of House Majority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) on Sunday--that a guest-worker bill would be inappropriate until border security had been finished--represents a change of direction, a new recognition that the immigration bill is dead. Senators rejected cloture on a stand-alone border-enforcement bill after the compromise on the immigration bill died. This could become a weapon for Republicans in some races. No Democrat supported the enforcement bill.
Dok Russia: If Mexicans want to come here, then fine. Do it legally. Register, so that we can make sure that your employer is not skipping out on his responsibilities to you, and passing along the costs to us. Do it legally, and let us make sure that we can weed out the murderers and drug dealers that are preying upon all of us. Do it legally. Get an education, Learn to speak English. Fine. Do all of those things. Just do them legally, or stay in Mexico.
From a health care professional at What Now Murphy: Hasn't it hit anyone between the goddamned eyes yet that there is only ONE group getting all in a hissy about this illegal immigration shit? You don't see any Vietnamese out there marching; nope, no Danes, hmm... where are the Canadians? The Japanese? Maybe because everyone ELSE does it legally. This will be an incredible insult to anyone who has ever gone through the process to become a legal citizen. Instead of, you know, the MEXICAN way of hanging out at a 24 hour Wal-Mart in the ninth month of pregnancy to drop their kid.
I'm pissed from watching television coverage of the recent immigration protests. The Latinos surely impressed me. I never want to see another fucking Mexican flag again in my life. (There's your precious "multiculturalism" in action.) And if an illegal immigrant wants to wave one, I suggest that he take his wetback ass back home to do it.
Don't sneak into MY country and then flip ME the finger. (Learn to speak English so that you can cuss me properly, dammit.) What the hell are you trying to do, anyway? The message seems to be, "We want your country, but we don't want YOU." Boy, THAT'S the way to win American hearts and minds to your cause.
Can you demonstrate just one time, one place, throughout all of human history, where restricting the access of handheld weapons to the average person made them safer?
I'll just say this about the so-called porkbusters. I'm getting damn tired of hearing from them. They have been nothing but trouble ever since Katrina.
DEAR NEW YORK TIMES: When the largest single fatality-causing event for your (well, our) soldiers in recent months is a single vehicle wreck, isn't it officially time to retire the theme that we're losing the war?
The 2005 Pig Book identified a record 13,997 projects in the 13 appropriations bills that constitute the discretionary portion of the federal budget for fiscal 2005, costing taxpayers $27.3 billion.
Well, let’s take a look at the Reagan legacy on federal spending and deficits. In 1980, the last year of Jimmy Carter’s presidency, government outlays were running at 21.7% of GDP and the budget deficit was 2.7% of GDP. (The economy was also a basket case, which is when you would expect budget deficits to be at their worse.) In 1988, Reagan’s last year in office, outlays as a percent of GDP were running at 21.3% with a deficit of 3.1% of GDP. The budget deficit over Reagan’s eight years averaged 4.2% and ran as high as 6.0% in 1983.
Bush entered office with an economy that was booming: in 2000 government outlays ran at 18.4% of GDP with a budget surplus of 2.4%. But the stock market implosion, 9/11 and the war quickly changed the budget dynamics and the surplus switched to a deficit of 3.5% in 2003 and 3.6% in 2004. In 2005, the budget deficit came in at 2.6%, with government outlays running at 20.1% of GDP.
Conservatives may harp on President Bush for increasing government outlays from 18½% to 20%, but the increase is almost exclusively spending on defense, homeland security and the war - all of which is a response to 9/11. The growth in non-security discretionary spending has been cut every year of the Bush presidency.
March 10, 2005 The Washington Post newspaper has surveyed the Senate's 44 Dems and Jim Jeffords, and they've determined that 42 to 44 rabidly oppose private accounts.
