Your basic bit of random knowledge for the day

 Vegetable oils are toxic.

You can go read that fairly quickly, as well as watch the videos.  I used to work with a guy who was a health nut as well as a body builder.  His statement was "Expeller-pressed seed oils are poison."  

We use olive oil and avocado oil here at the Ragin' Casa, along with butter, bacon drippings that we save, and sesame oil.  If you look at sesame oil it's made the same way as olive oil, meaning you're not using the toxic process to get the oil out that happens with any kind of other seed.

Oh, and Crisco basically sits in your arteries.  It's a heart attack in a can.

I am amazed that when people go to the doctor with health problems, the doctor doesn't first go over what you're eating or not eating.  Food is the fuel your body uses to build and repair itself.  If you're eating crap food, you're going to feel like shit.  You put crappy gas into your car, it's going to run like shit.  Same with your body.

Just EVOO, Coconut Oil and Butter in my house.

I cook enough asian food that sesame oil is required. And bacon drippings? That's God's gift to cooking, but we use it sparingly because bacon is expensive. At least, the uncured kind the wife can eat is expensive. I'm guessing normal bacon is still not cheap, but not the ungodly price we pay for the uncured stuff.

We use coconut oil to make popcorn. Best popcorn ever.

We have begun to rid ourselves of seed oils. We dumped margarine years ago and only use butter for cooking. To rid ourselves totally is a huge task.

I love bacon but, holy shit $8 a pound and up? Ouch! I have managed to get my dear wife away from canola as I knew that was awful. Much of our cooking nowadays relies on some form of oil. Is there anything that may be substituted? Butter sometimes but, what else?

Olive oil and avocado oils. The process to get those two oils is far simpler than vegetable oil and doesn't use any of the chemicals like canola oil. Same with coconut oil, but I've found that coconut oil still has a coconut kind of taste when you cook with it. Which for some things might be just right, but I'm not a big coconut fan. Olive and Avocado oils are pretty neutral in flavor.

Dave, use your bacon drippings on the barbeque next time you do a steak. Get the grill raging hot, throw on the steak then pour on small amounts of melted bacon drippings over the steak, you should get a fire going under the steak that flavors the meat. Use good sense, DO NOT pour big amounts of drippings on the fire. Using bacon grease and fire to flavor the meat is wonderful.

Oh yeah. And we rub our potatoes down with bacon drippings before we bake them. It's a game changer.
