"Flickering"

Were i a GOP advisor or operative, i'd make much of John Edwards' assertion that the light of America is "flickering". In fact, i think Vice President Cheney missed a great opportunity to put an explanation point on tonight's debate. This is a time when leaders should be rallying Americans, not putting forth the notion that America is flickering. Funny, isn't it, that that's what the terrorists would have us believe, that we are on our deathbeds.

I'd have liked to have seen Cheney open his closing statement with something like this:

"I first want to reaffirm for Americans what they already instinctively know. America's light is not flickering. America is the greatest invention in the history of mankind. We are an intrepid nation, a hard-working nation, an innovative and courageous and compassionate nation. We've yet to scratch the surface of the greatness that our love for freedom and liberty drives us toward. Pat Buchanan once said that immigration is the sincerest form of flattery. Millions of people worldwide yearn to come to America to share in our promise. They understand our dream, and our strength, and our commitment to this great nation and its ideals. America is not flickering, Senator, nor will she ever. Now..."
