I also encourage kids to learn how to shoot. A single-shot .22LR rifle, or a .410 shotgun is a perfect learning tool.

A light loaded 20 gauge instead of a 410 because 410's are experts guns.
With 410's there is not much of a load of shot and they have a propensity for patterns that have large gaps.
A 20g. can be loaded from really light skeet to fairly heavy slugs.
Much less expensive to buy and easier to find most shells with the 20 too.
Once the kid gets really good with the 20 then it might be time to start looking at the 410.
