Of course Obama would love this. In the face of a threat to person and property, people reflexively look for protectors -- and in our era, the most common reflex is to demand that the State do something, which strengthens the State.
Never forget that Fear is the State's best friend. Politicians all know this, which is why they seek to make you fear their opponents.
Consider the laxity of our border control in this light, and much that would otherwise seem inexplicable becomes perfectly clear.
