Kicking the wheels, testing the acceleration, you know the drill. The old one is stuttering so hard right now that I can't even back up files to my portable hard drive. I may end up transferring files via a thumb drive.

Another option might be to get a SATA-to-USB interface gadget, and turn the old computer's internal drive into an external drive.
Or, you might try using a Linux live CD to copy the files off the old machine, assuming you're running Windows - in my experience, Linux is better about getting files off a damaged Windows filesystem than Windows is.
It's actually a Mac to another Mac. The old MacBook was over five years old at this point, and it's showing the hard use I've put it through. The Mrs. got me a MacBook Air, which doesn't have a CD drive. I have some thumb drives around here which should allow me to transfer what I want. That's if I can't get my old back-up drive to work, which I think I can.
Ah. I don't know much about Macs, but I think MacOS is at least as good at copying its own filesystems as any alternative would be (notably unlike Windows, which does not handle errors gracefully).
If the old machine is too creaky, though, turning its internal drive into an external drive long enough to rescue the files is usually an option (right up to the point where the drive becomes totally unreadable, of course).
