One of the most satisfying things I did when I PCS’d here was to toss the TV & stereo gear original packaging. Nothing says “I’m done movin’” quite as loudly.
Brian - trust me, I'm more than motivated to dump crap. Luckily, a lot of what I have the storage unit is either a shit-ton of dunnage (boxes and wrapping paper) or it's destined for St. Vincent de Paul.
Dave, when we left Rogues Island for Florida it was just at the beginning of the covid assault on our rights. No garage sales permitted and we had a shit ton of crap to unload. My son and I made at least 15 trips with 2 cars of boxes and items to the local cat sanctuary (only place we could use) and we STILL had a shit ton of stuff to get rid of.
The day we were to drive to Florida we filled 5 neighbors 90 gallon trash containers and corresponding recycling bins and we also gave away our plasma tv to the neighbor.
We had a Pod and a Uhaul box for the rest. Dave we still had stuff to get rid of once we got down here. It is a work in progress. I still find stuff 3 years later to toss - wondering what the hell did I keep this for?
It would seem that the American way is accumulate all your life for the kids to dispose of it. Does it make us happier? Nope! We have pared down a lot (mostly cuz we don't have a big house any longer). It is good to minimize and I want to get rid of more.
Watch a few episodes of "Hoarders" and that will give you the motivation to dump most of your boxes.
