Congratulations, Dave. The country's better for your military service, and it'll be better for your service as a civilian too.
You weren't ready to go because a fellow can't be ready to go. The military will stay with you for life -- of course you already knew that, but I mean in ways that you'll not expect.
If you intend to keep working, and haven't already lined up something, may I politely suggest that you aim as high as you can and then find some ex-military guys at a senior level in the field, and ask them out for coffee and advice. Because if you start at the bottom, that's where your civilian colleagues will mentally position you, and you'll have to climb back up the ladder the hard way. Unless of course you're working in a rare field where real professional qualification, concrete deliverables and overall merit still mean something.
Thanks for writing. There are more of us here lurking than you might guess.
Congratulations! Well done! The transition will take time so take a deep breath and relax your mind. Life is great and you have earned every joy you can find.
Now, time to do some fishing.
ReplyDeleteCongrats, Brother. It’s an odd feeling tho, ain’t it?
