I had this conversation with a friend of mine last night. The salient point was that no one...
I MEAN NO ONE!
...starts taking drugs with the expectation that they are going to become an addict. Every one of these folks KNEW that it wouldn't happen to them; that they'd be able to stop anytime they wanted. They didn't intend to become addicts. No one does. The biggest issue with drug use is the "it won't happen to me" attitude and the way that i counter that is to ask these dumbasses if they think that any addict out on the street thought "i want to become an addict today!" when they started.
My friend told me that meth, for instance, has a 99.5% first-time-use addiction rate. i don't know if that is true, but even if it is half that it is an impressive and scary number.
Not even once. It scares the shit out of me that so many of our kids, with all the information that is available today, are still stupid enough to try using. Amy Winehouse's story is tragic because it never should have happened.
