I'm all in favor of this

Insty, commenting on how to demilitarize the police:

A simple rule would be to provide that police can have only weapons that a civilian could lawfully possess, since they’re civilians themselves.

Of course, it would have to be weapons available to ALL civilians, not just the politically favored ones.

Here's what I was qualified on in 1973 when I first became a Deputy Sheriff: Ruger Security Six .357, S&W Model 60 .38 snubbie, Remington 870 12-ga pump shotgun, Remington 760 Pump Rifle in 30-06 (Ouch! Still remember the recoil!)

At the end of my career in 2003, I was qualified on the Glock 23 pistol and the Ruger SP 101 .357 snubbie instead of the Security Six and Model 60. I had briefly been qualified on the AR-15 during a short stint on the Special Weapons Squad, a volunteer assignment. The Squad was full of jerks, though, and I was "un-volunteered" for demonstrating that I was as good with irons on my rifle as they were with optics, then suggesting that training should be with irons first, then optics. How Radical. You're fired was the reply I got.

I then formed and led a fight to stay with the traditional Sheriff's uniforms instead of the BDU style the newbies wanted. Losing that fight, it was time to retire, so I did.

I'd change 'weapons' to 'equipment though.

Cops want APC's and military grade body armor then regular Joes get to own them as well.

Rivrdog - I can't count the number of self-important assholes I met as an MP. These people had some serious Daddy issues, and yet they were given authority and a 9mm, then told to go out into public.

Sometimes I think the cops are their own worst enemies.
