So far, he's managed to hide that well, but I remember that he was schooled in a madrasa, so he at least has Muslim leanings. Wouldn't surprise me to find that he is indeed a Muslim, and Islam is a violent, hateful religion against all others.
WHY he bowed is nowhere near as painful as the fact that he bowed at all. Whether it be because he's a Muslim, because he wants to gob the King's nob, or whether it's because his complete and total lack of a spine caused him to fold in half - Any reason for bowing is nowhere as bad as the act itself.

The King reminded him that he was still a Muslim with a duty to show homage to a Caliph.
